Genealogy is also called family tree, clan tree, etc. It is a book that records the lineage and important figures of a family in the form of a genealogy. Genealogy is a special document. In terms of its content, it is a document with civilian characteristics in the history of Chinese civilization. It records the historical records of the lineage, figures and deeds of the bloodline groups of the same clan and common ancestor. According to research, the ancient Chinese surnames originated from totem worship and are clan emblems or symbols.

Genealogy is a precious humanistic material, and it has an irreplaceable and unique function for in-depth research in history, folklore, demography, sociology and economics. After years of war and social unrest in successive dynasties, the genealogies handed down in history have been almost lost, and the lineages of many families have been disconnected and lost. Before the Song Dynasty, genealogies were mainly compiled by officials, mainly as a reference for the selection of officials and the marriage status of big surnames and prominent families. The genealogy system of the Ming Dynasty reached maturity and perfection, laying the foundation for the basic pattern of genealogy in later generations. The Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China can be regarded as the peak period of the development of Chinese genealogy.

Genealogy is not only an important part of national historical documents, but also an important support for the continuation of the spiritual bloodline and cultural inheritance of the Chinese nation. As an important carrier of family, family education, and family tradition, genealogy, together with official history and local chronicles, jointly constructs the three pillars of Chinese historical documents and is an important part of my country's precious historical and cultural heritage.

CnOpenData has compiled more than 2,000 PDF documents of genealogy from various regions of China to help related research.
