  Discipline evaluation is an overall level evaluation of first-level disciplines with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees by the Degree and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education in accordance with the "Degree Conferment and Talent Cultivation Discipline Catalog" issued by the State Council Degree Committee and the Ministry of Education.

  Discipline evaluation always adheres to the principle of "voluntary application, free participation". All first-level disciplines (including first-level disciplines and second-level disciplines) with the right to confer doctoral or master's degrees in each unit can apply for participation. Discipline evaluation is conducted on average once every four years.

  • The first round of evaluation was conducted in three rounds from 2002 to 2004 (each time evaluating some disciplines), with a total of 1,366 disciplines from 229 units participating in the evaluation.
  • The second round of evaluation was conducted in two phases from 2006 to 2008, with 2,369 disciplines from 331 institutions participating.
  • The third round of evaluation was conducted in 2012 in 95 first-level disciplines (excluding military science), with 4,235 disciplines from 391 institutions participating (79% more than the second round).
  • The fourth round of evaluation was conducted in 2016 in 95 first-level disciplines (excluding 16 disciplines such as military science), with 7,449 disciplines from 513 institutions participating (76% more than the third round), and 94% of the disciplines with doctoral degree-granting authority in universities nationwide applied for the evaluation.

  The purpose of publishing the evaluation results is to provide objective information for participating units to understand the advantages and disadvantages of disciplines, promote the construction of discipline connotations, and improve the quality of graduate training; to provide reference for students to choose disciplines and majors; and to facilitate all sectors of society to understand the status and effectiveness of the construction of discipline connotations in my country's universities and scientific research institutions.

  The CnOpenData data team launched the Chinese discipline evaluation data, which is currently the most accurate and complete discipline big data in my country. It is divided into two sub-tables: university discipline evaluation results, scientific research unit discipline evaluation results. At the same time, in order to strengthen the classification and evaluation of different disciplines and reflect their characteristics, the indicator system is specifically divided into seven categories, including "humanities and social sciences", "science", "engineering", "agriculture", "medicine", "management", and "arts", which truly realizes the multi-type and deep-level mining of data!
